QIDONG RIVERFRONT MASTER PLAN

Qidong, China

The Qidong Riverfront is a three-kilometre stretch of rural canal fronting the proposed Qidong Town Centre. Adjoining the bustling Jiang Hai Road, the riverfront provides an important strategic link and a symbolic connection to the city from Shanghai and the Yangtze River.

CLOUSTON Associates was engaged to master plan this link, transforming the canal into a thriving riverfront park while nurturing the cultural identity of this rapidly expanding region. CLOUSTON developed a vibrant concept that focused on improving visual and physical access to the water, integrated the parkland with wetland areas and proposed urban development, and reclaimed the canal for public recreation.

Extensive areas of wetlands and biofiltration systems were proposed to improve the water quality of the canal. A continuous pedestrian link has been created, with multiple points of access to the waterway offering opportunities for outdoor eating and riverfront activities. Cultural traditions of the area are reflected in the details of the design, providing a strong sense of place.
